PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH
Maternal mental health (MMH) conditions will affect 1 in 5 people and represent the most common complication of pregnancy.
Perinatal depression, which can occur any time from the beginning of pregnancy through the end of the first year following birth, can often happen alongside anxiety, or other mood disorders.
Treatment in the form of therapy and/or medication is available and should be sought as soon as you realize something is wrong. In many cases, medication is perfectly safe.
Even mild depression can escalate quickly. Let your OB-GYN, midwife, or nurse practitioner know immediately if you are experiencing symptoms. If they cannot help, ask for a referral to a perinatal psychiatrist, a doctor who specializes in treating mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period. You can also visit PSI to search for providers in your area.
